ウェビナー: Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry – State of the Art

Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) is a suitable method for determining the pore size, particle size, bulk density and bulk density of solids and is described in ISO 15901-1. The liquid, non-wetting mercury is pressed into the porous or particulate system, whereby the applied pressure is inversely proportional to the pore size. Pore sizes from 3.6 nm to one millimetre can be detected in less than an hour. There is currently no alternative method. Other results from MIP include pore volume, specific surface area, size, fractal dimensions, compressibility and bulk modulus, tortuosity and more. This contribution will cover various aspects of mercury intrusion porosimetry, such as safe handling of mercury and easy recycling in the lab to minimise the amount of mercury used. In addition, applications and some special notes for the measurement of cement-based materials, pharmaceuticals, battery electrodes and separators, ceramics and more are presented and discussed.

Dr. Jürgen Adolphs, Director Product Management

Dr Jürgen Adolphs studied physics and mathematics at the University of Göttingen with a thesis on engine acoustics (VW). He then moved to the University of Duisburg-Essen / Building Physics and Materials Science in Civil Engineering and completed his doctorate in Theoretical and Physical Chemistry on sorption modelling. This was followed by research stays in the USA at Northwestern University Evanston ILL, Advanced Cement Based Materials Center, Argonne ILL. Synchrotron Facility and NIST Gaithersburg SANS. In 2001, he joined Porotec GmbH, a company specialising in equipment for the characterisation of porous and special materials. In 2010, Jürgen became co-owner and Managing Director until 2020, when Porotec GmbH was acquired by Verder Scientific and integrated into Microtrac. Jürgen is author of more than 60 publications and active in ISO and as convenor of the DIN committee. As former head of the application centre in Haan, Jürgen now focuses on surface and porosity analysis as team leader of product management and sales manager.
